Best California Woods for Carving a Food-Safe Coffee Mug?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to carve a coffee mug as a special gift and want to use a wood that's native to California since it holds sentimental value for the birthday girl. As a beginner in hand carving, I'm curious if there's a California wood that's good for carving and safe for use with hot liquids. Any suggestions?

You should definitely check out Myrtlewood! It's great for what you need and has a lovely aroma like cinnamon and eucalyptus. Plus, its scientific name, Umbellularia californica, gives a nod to California. Just be aware that it can get quite hard, which might make it a bit challenging to carve. Here's a cool pic of it: [Myrtlewood](https://preview.redd.it/4wms1gnovy9f1.png?width=1078&format=png&auto=webp&s=7e2e48d6308221a3d0a81956b084ada90fb06960).

I agree, Myrtle is stunning! Just be prepared; it's pretty tough to carve with!

Redwood, California walnut, or different types of oak like live oak and coastal live oak are all solid options for your mug project. Also, don’t forget about sycamore, which could work well too!

There are a few options for California woods, but you should keep in mind that they might not handle hot liquids perfectly. One idea is to carve your mug and use a glass beaker inside to hold the coffee, which can make it safer and easier to use. Good luck with your project!

I’d recommend using Coast Live Oak. It's really safe for what you're planning, though it might be tricky to source. Just make sure to check around!
