I'm struggling with heat in my apartment due to the large windows, especially with the current heatwave in Europe. I've tried several solutions like window film, sealing cracks, and even cardboard, but they're all pretty cumbersome to put up and take down. I can't use an AC because I'm renting, and my portable unit doesn't reach my main living area. I have blackout curtains, but I'm thinking of hanging thin blankets on the outside to block heat since they're affordable and I can trap them between the windows when I close them. I'm curious if certain types of blankets work better than others. Does the color or fabric make a difference? I've heard about space blankets being effective, but I'm wary of the silver color giving off the wrong impression. Would love any tips!

I’d recommend thick, white quilts or polyester-filled duvets. They insulate really well, which is key for blocking heat. Just remember, you'll need to secure them with straps or cords since they won't fit perfectly within the window frame. You could check out thrift stores for some affordable options!
If you can swing it, blackout blinds designed with a honeycomb or baffled structure are great for insulation against heat and cold. They can be a bit pricier but do work wonders!
Using a combo of Mylar emergency blankets and light-colored thin blankets is your best shot. The Mylar blankets reflect the heat and could go behind your blackout curtains for extra insulation. The light-colored blankets between the windows will keep things cooler by reflecting sunlight instead of sucking it in.
