How Do I Prevent My Rocket from Going to Seed Too Early?

I've been trying to grow rocket, but I keep running into the same issue: after a few small leaves sprout, it bolts and goes to seed, leading to dying back of the leaves. I can never seem to get the size of leaves like those I see in stores. I follow the instructions on the seed packet, but I'm looking for tips or advice from anyone who's had more success with growing rocket than I have.

You might want to try a different rocket variety. There are types that thrive better in different climates, so finding the right match could help. Good luck!

Definitely worth exploring! I’ve found that just a few fresh leaves from the garden really uplift a salad.

Rocket tends to bolt when temperatures rise, so one trick is to sow it later in August for a fall crop or earlier in the spring to give it time to establish before the heat sets in. If your plants do flower, you could either collect the seeds or let them self-seed for a better chance next time. Another idea is to grow your rocket in an area that gets some shade to protect it from the hottest part of the day.

Totally understand your frustration! My salad crops bolted this year too. Usually, I can get a few harvests before it happens, but with the warm weather, I didn’t get any. I did everything right, even sowing early! It's just one of those gardening challenges.

I've faced the same challenge with rocket! It's really sensitive to heat and loves to bolt. I've had better luck with wild varieties over cultivated ones since they tend to stay leafier longer. Consider planting in partial shade or using larger pots to keep the soil cool and moist. Also, picking the leaves while they're small can help delay bolting a bit.
