I've got a bunch of kale plants that are getting completely devastated by caterpillars. I've tried using neem oil, but it's not helping much. I'm aware that there's also Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), but I'm really looking for ways to prevent the caterpillars from getting on my kale in the first place, rather than relying on sprays that only work after they start munching on my plants. What are some effective strategies to repel caterpillars before they even get to my kale?

It sounds like you're looking for something more preventative than just sprays. Have you considered sticking with barriers like row covers? They can create a physical barrier so the caterpillars can't even reach your plants. Alternatively, you can try introducing natural predators like birds or even beneficial insects that feed on caterpillars for some extra help!
A great way to protect your kale is to use insect netting or row covers before the cabbage moths start reproducing. If you plan ahead for next season, this can really save your plants from those pesky caterpillars!

Yeah, I've heard that birds can be super helpful. I might try putting up some birdhouses to attract them!
