I'm a multi-family owner in the Chicagoland area and I'm dealing with serious noise issues from the second floor to the first. My first-floor tenants have been complaining for months about noise from footfalls and conversations above them. To soundproof the ceiling, I got quotes for insulation—$5,000 for cellulose and $8,000 for rockwool. The insulation contractor is okay with those prices, but I need separate quotes for the drywalling because they'll be cutting strips to install the insulation. I received quotes of $6,750 and $6,000 from drywall contractors just to patch those holes. Is this reasonable, or are these prices out of whack for what I'm asking? It seems excessive for patching about a dozen strips in the ceiling, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and could shed some light on these costs.

The finish of your walls affects the price a lot. A smooth finish is more expensive than a textured one because skilled labor is involved. Patching isn’t a quick task, and they might have to deal with variations in the cuts. So, these quotes might not be as outrageous as they seem, especially considering your area has a high cost of living.

That makes sense! I didn’t consider how the wall finish would impact labor costs. Thanks for the heads-up!
