How Difficult Is It to Install Rockwool Insulation Batts in My Garage?

I'm considering installing rockwool insulation batts in my garage, which has 2x6 framed walls on the inside. I've received a labor quote of $3 per sq ft for a total of 700 sq ft, which seems expensive to me, especially since I live in a high cost of living area. I'm handy but have never put in insulation before. The walls are standard stud bays with some cuts needed for electrical wiring but no plumbing to navigate. Is it a bad idea to take on this project myself and how tough is the installation really? I'm also thinking about potentially doing the drywall myself, but I've never done that before, so I would appreciate any insights on that as well!

I’ve worked with both Rockwool and Owens Corning, and Rockwool is definitely better—sturdier and easier to work with. You won't need as much PPE as with fiberglass, but it’s still good to have gloves and long sleeves. For drywall, just take your time with the measurements and use drywall screws for better support. It can be time-consuming, but you can do it!

Definitely doable on your own! Just make sure to wear PPE since rockwool can be itchy. A great tip is to grab an electric carving knife for cutting the batts. It makes the job a lot easier and gives you precise cuts. You can lay the batts out on two sawhorses to cut them as needed. Once you get the hang of it, the batts fit nicely into place without too much trouble!

Good call on the electric knife! I was just going to use a regular bread knife, but that sounds much better.

Oh wow, I never thought of that! Definitely sounds like a smarter choice.

From my experience, installing rockwool is pretty straightforward. Just a heads up, if you're sensitive to materials, it can itch a bit, so wearing a tyvek suit is recommended. Compared to fiberglass, it's not as irritating, but it can be uncomfortable. Make sure you slice channels for any wires instead of compressing the batts around them. As for the drywall, just be patient and measure twice before cutting; it can get a bit messy, so be prepared for that!

Thanks for that insight! I’ve dealt with fiberglass before, so I appreciate the heads up on the rockwool.
