I'm renovating my home, which has these beautiful rough cut exposed beams. I'm planning to sand the tops to make it easier to dust them off later, since they're out of sight. What grit sandpaper would be best for this job?

I’d suggest going with a range between 120 and 220 grit. Or if you want a quicker method, try using a shop vacuum with extensions along with a brush—it works wonders on my hand-hewn chestnut beams!
I'd say 120 grit will be plenty for sanding those beams. It should smooth them out nicely without making them too slick for dusting.
Totally agree that 120 grit is probably enough. Plus, if you add a wipe-on poly finish, it'll make dusting even easier—just avoid having it drip down the sides!

Great tip about the finish, thanks! I'll look into that.
