Dealing with Weeds After Rough Grading: Should I Take Action Now?

I just bought a new construction home with a backyard that was roughly graded by the builder. I've noticed a lot of weeds coming up everywhere! I plan to hire a landscaping company next year to finish the grading, but I'm wondering if these weeds are going to be a problem for them. Should I try to take care of the weeds myself now, or can I wait until the landscaping is done?

Trust me, you don’t want to wait on this. I had a similar situation and those weeds can really get out of control—they can be tall and tough enough that mowing won’t touch them. Plus, if they spread too much, you might run into trouble with local regulations about maintaining your yard. If you can, get the landscaper in sooner to handle the grading and seed it; that’s really your best move.

If you’re considering waiting, I wouldn't recommend it. While you’re sorting things out, think about applying some pre-emergent or post-emergent weed control if you can’t get a landscaper out right away. It could help in the meantime!

Thanks for the advice! Those weeds are pretty tall already, so I’ll definitely look into some weed control options soon.

Your best bet would be to deal with those weeds now! A contractor could quickly scrape them away with a skid steer. It’s a pretty fast job, and it’ll make things easier for your landscaper later on.
