Hey everyone! I'm Rafael, an 18-year-old from Brazil who's recently fallen in love with wood carving. After diving into the beginner tutorials here, I'm eager to hear more hands-on advice from those who've been through the beginner stage. What are some essential tools I should start with, without going overboard? Are there specific types of wood that are better for beginners? Also, what techniques or exercises helped you get the hang of carving? If you have any favorite channels or websites for learning, I'd appreciate the recommendations. Looking forward to starting this journey! Cheers!

Ah, fellow beginner here! I agree with the sharpness thing. For wood, try using basswood if it's available; it's soft and easy to work with. And for tools, I'd recommend starting with a flat chisel and a few gouges. Go to a local cabinetmaker and see if you can snag some offcuts for practice.
When starting out, it's super important to learn how each tool works. Spend some time just getting a feel for them. Plus, sharpening is key! Don’t overlook it; if your tools are sharp, everything else will fall into place. Also, I can't stress safety enough — a good carving glove is a must!
I’d suggest checking out Doug Linker and Johnny Layton on YouTube! They have a ton of character carving tutorials that are super beginner-friendly. Also, don’t forget to look into safety guidelines for using your tools — really important for avoiding accidents!

Thanks for the tips! Do you have any specific channels or resources you recommend for beginners?
