What Digital Design Software Should I Use and How Do I Learn It?

I'm excited to finally have the hardware to dive into digital design beyond just the Microsoft suite. I've got a pretty capable PC and a Surface Pro 11, so I'm looking for some software recommendations. Shapr looks promising, especially since they offer a full course on how to use it. I'd love any suggestions you might have, along with tips on how to actually learn to use the software effectively!

Fusion 360 is quite popular among hobbyists. I initially tried a few different programs but always seem to come back to it. It's free for hobbyists and although it might feel a bit complex if you're new to CAD, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube. It might feel a bit like overkill for simple woodworking, but once you get into it, the functionality is impressive!

Yeah, Fusion's definitely powerful! Just be prepared to invest some time to really learn it.

SketchUp is my go-to, but if you've never touched CAD before, I suggest starting with it as it has an easier learning curve. There are even older versions online that work without needing an internet connection. It comes naturally to me after nearly a decade of use, unlike Fusion 360, which I found too complicated to stick with.

That's super helpful! I think I might try SketchUp first since I want to get up and running quickly.

I've been using the free version of SketchUp for about 5 years now, and it was a game changer for my design process. After spending a couple of days on their basic tutorials and finding a great YouTube channel, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. It's great for everything from small furniture to full building frames. It really helps to visualize your projects digitally before you start cutting any wood to avoid issues later on.
