How to Smooth Out a Work Bench Made from Old Hockey Sticks?

I'm working on creating a workbench for my garage using some old ice hockey sticks that my partner has. While I plan to build a frame to hold the stick shafts together, I'm concerned about the grooved spaces that will form between each stick. Since I want to use the bench as a potting station for my plants, I need a way to make the surface smooth enough to prevent soil from getting stuck in those crevices. I'm considering options like resin or maybe clear grout. What do you all suggest for achieving a smooth surface?

A clear epoxy pour would be a solid choice! It’ll fill those grooves nicely and give you a smooth finish for your potting station. Just make sure to let it cure thoroughly before using the bench!

I’m curious about that clear grout idea too! If you can find one that holds up well, it might just do the trick for smoothing out the gaps. Would love to see the type you choose!

If you really want that glassy surface, a hand plane would work wonders. It's great for flattening out surfaces. A handheld belt sander could also help, but just be careful if you want to keep the logos and paint on the sticks.

Thanks for the advice! I definitely want to preserve those logos, so I'll be careful with any sanding.
