Is My Vinyl Siding Installed Incorrectly?

Hey folks! I'm wondering if the outside corner pieces of my vinyl siding were installed incorrectly? I've noticed that the top corner piece doesn't overlap with the bottom one like I expected; instead, the bottom piece sits on top of the top piece. This makes me worry about potential water getting behind the siding. Also, I can see some rotting sheathing from my basement underneath this area. I've observed that there's no starter strip used anywhere on the house, and I even saw a mouse crawl out from the gap between the siding and the sheathing where the rot is visible. This installation was done before I bought the house, and I missed these issues until a few years later.

Yeah, that looks wrong to me. It seems like it might have been a repair that wasn’t done properly. For sure, both corners are different, but they should’ve been installed correctly. You could use caulk as a temporary fix if you need to for now.

Thanks for your input! I don’t think it’s a repair though; it looks more like a poor installation since all the corners are like that. Guess I’ll be resorting to caulk.
