Help me create a wireless indicator light for my partner

I'm working on a fun project where I want to set up a light or some kind of visual alert on my desk that my partner can use to get my attention without yelling for me. I usually stay up later than they do, and I often have headphones in. If they need me, whether it's just to talk or if they're feeling unwell and need something, I want them to have a simple way to notify me, rather than having to call me or use their phone.

I've considered a few options, but I'm unsure what the device is commonly called. I tried searching for 'remote activated wireless lights' but mostly found options for larger overhead lights, which seems excessive for my needs. I saw something called a 'friendship light' by LuvLink, which is somewhat similar, but I want mine to be a one-way signal that they can activate with a button.

Currently, I'm thinking of repurposing a remote light by hijacking its wireless signal and experimenting with it on a breadboard setup. I'm new to asking for advice on Reddit for these kinds of projects and would love any unique thoughts or helpful ideas!

You could simplify things by just getting a remote-controlled outlet and plug in a lamp! It might be exactly what you need unless there’s something specific you’re looking for that I’m missing.

Are you looking to set this up inside your house or over the internet? If it’s just for use at home, a simple option would be to pick up an IKEA Tradfri kit. It’s straightforward and perfect for setting up a single light with a switch. If you want to go beyond that later, you can always expand with more components or create a smart home system!
