Facing Black Mold Issues in My New Home – Seeking Success Stories and Advice

I recently purchased a house built in the 1950s and began a bathroom renovation. During the process, I discovered that a pipe was sweating, leading to mold development inside the walls. After removing the wall and shower, I found that two studs were at 17% moisture, while the rest were fine. I had a mold testing company confirm the presence of chaetomium and stachybotrys (black mold) and advised remediation due to the types of mold found. Fortunately, the adjacent room was clear. I hired a recommended remediation company that took several steps, including applying MSR on all studs, removing all insulation, treating visible mold, and using HEPA scrubbers and vacuums to ensure thorough cleaning. After their work, I moisture-tested the bathroom again and it was completely dry. I've sent off new mold tests and should get results soon. I'm feeling anxious about this situation since all I find online are horror stories. Has anyone had a similar experience with good outcomes? Any advice or insights?

It sounds like you have handled it well so far! The key to preventing mold from returning is to make sure no moisture seeps back in. Professional companies might charge a lot, but it seems like they covered all bases in your case. Just keep an eye on the humidity levels and your remodel should hold up well. Good luck with the test results!

Thanks for sharing your experience… It's encouraging to hear that it might all be okay as long as you've dealt with the moisture!

The key thing is that you've already tackled the moisture problem. You mentioned addressing the sweating pipe which is great. Professional remediation can be a mixed bag; while it can seem pricey, sometimes it's just peace of mind. I’ve heard stories where as long as moisture issues are resolved and the area is thoroughly cleaned, it often ends up fine. Just wait for your test results and don’t stress too much!

Absolutely! Online mold horror stories can be overwhelming, but your proactive steps are what really matter here. Even if mold is common, getting rid of moisture fixes most problems.
