I'm considering purchasing a Jet DC-1100VX-CK Vortex Dust Collector for $500. It comes with some attachments and extra bags since the previous owner is moving and it's a hobbyist's tool. As a weekend woodworker who typically uses my garage for tools like a table saw, router, and sander, I currently rely on a shop vac (which isn't great) and a leaf blower to manage the dust outside. I plan to build a proper workshop eventually, but that's a decade away—I'm also busy with family for the next three years. I really enjoy woodworking and could use some convincing from you all, especially to help me persuade my wife!

That Jet dust collector is actually a solid option for bigger tools, especially with 4" dust ports like your table saw. However, keep in mind that for smaller stuff like routers and sanders, your shop vac may outdo it because it struggles with static pressure. If you're looking for something adaptable for all sizes, you might want to check out the Oneida Supercell or Camvacs. But hey, the price sounds right for what you're getting! Does it include the canister filter or just the standard cloth bag?
I’ve used this same model, and while I mainly use it for my thicknesser, it’s pretty handy for sweeping up larger messes too. It definitely shines with tools that have a 100mm dust port, but for smaller tools, it falls short. I upgraded from a dust cyclone to a Makita dust extractor and that thing works wonders! If you can stretch your budget to around $500-800, something like the Makita VC4210M with a self-cleaning feature could be more beneficial for your sanding and routing needs.

I'm not sure about that, but that’s a good question! It could really make a difference in performance.
