Tips for Planting: Should I Use My Existing Soil or Amend It?

Asked By SunnyDaze321 On

I'm diving into gardening, but I'm unsure whether I should just plant in the soil I have in my backyard or if I need to amend it first. If I do amend it, what would be a good mix to use? Any advice would be appreciated!

If your soil is decent, you can perform well directly in the ground. But if it’s sandy or poor, I’d suggest mixing in some organic matter like leaves, mulch, and additional soil to improve it.

My soil’s kind of a sandy/clay mix. Do you have any recommendations for what type of soil to add? Thanks!

It really depends on what you're planning to grow and how packed your soil is. Amending the soil is usually a solid choice. I recommend using something like MiracleGro garden soil since they have different mixes tailored to specific plants' needs. Just make sure it's suitable for what you're growing!

I was hesitant about MiracleGro because I see mixed reviews, but I tried another brand and it didn’t drain well at all. I'm definitely leaning more towards MiracleGro now!

Make sure to set up your planting hole properly. Adding compost and some fertilizer can really help. Just mix everything together nicely before planting. It’ll give your plants a great start!

I’m worried about my clay/sandy soil, though. Any specific tips?
