What’s the Average Cost for Replacing an HVAC System in My Home?

I need to replace my AC unit since it stopped working, and it's over 12 years old. My home's size is about 1985 square feet, and the previous unit was a 3-ton model. I'm trying to figure out what a reasonable price is for a new system. One independent contractor quoted me between $5,000 and $6,000 for a Goodman unit. How does this price compare, and is Goodman a solid brand?

I’ve seen HVAC replacement costs range anywhere from $8,000 to $20,000! It really just depends on your location and the specific requirements of your setup. Getting a few estimates will help you gauge the average for your area.

I just put in a new 2-ton 16 SEER unit for about $4,500 not too long ago. Also, don’t forget to ask about the refrigerant they’ll be using, as current regulations have introduced new refrigerants this year which might require new line sets. Some companies might still have older units in stock.

The cost really varies based on your area, so it's a good idea to get at least three quotes from local HVAC companies. Just make sure they don’t pressure you into signing on the spot with some crazy discounts—those offers are usually a red flag that the prices are inflated.
