Can I Use Composted Dirt Mixed with Something Else for Potting Soil?

I just got some large pots to fill but buying potting soil isn't in my budget right now. I have some dirt sourced from a cow farm that I added to my compost pile, and I know plants thrive in it. I'm wondering if mixing that composted dirt with another material (which I can't remember the name of right now) would work well for drainage in the pots.

Yeah, I agree that straight-up dirt from the ground is usually not ideal for container gardening. It’s great that the plants grow well in it, but soil without proper drainage can lead to issues like root rot. Mixing in something like perlite or coconut coir could really help with water drainage! Just keep an eye on how your plants react to it.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely consider mixing in some perlite for better drainage.

Using regular ground soil, even if it's composted, typically isn't the best choice for pots. However, you might be able to make it work! Why not give it a shot and let us know how it goes in a few months? I'd love to hear how the plants respond! I tried something similar once and didn’t get great results, but your experience might be different.
