I recently received a Fatsia japonica, a Sambucus nigra, and some Salvia as birthday gifts. With the current dry weather conditions, I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to plant them right away. Should I keep them in pots until September, or will they be okay if I plant them now?

You can keep them in pots for now, but I’d recommend planting them if possible. Just prep the hole with some compost, fill it with water, and then let it drain before planting. That way, they’ll have a good start. Just be ready to water them regularly after that!
I'd say go ahead and plant them! They’ll actually thrive better in the ground, even in this hot weather. Just make sure to water them regularly to help them adjust.
It really depends on the size of your plants. I had similar ones in small pots, and they settled in pretty quickly. If they're larger, they might need a bit more time in pots. Just keep an eye on them! Sometimes larger plants struggle a bit when transplanted. It really all comes down to their specific circumstances.
