Hey everyone! I'm looking to build a set of 9-step stringers for an exterior door, with each tread being 24" wide and the risers at 8" high. Has anyone attempted something similar? I'm really curious if this design would be sturdy enough. Also, what size of 2" dimensional lumber would you recommend? Should I go with 2x10, 2x12, or even something larger like 2x16 or 2x24?

From what I can tell, you'll probably want a 20' long 2x12 board based on some quick calculations. One thing to consider, though, is that a 24" tread might feel a bit awkward for stepping, as most people might find themselves placing both feet on the same tread instead of stepping over. On the plus side, your stringer would definitely be stronger than a typical step, since you’ll have more material on each stringer compared to standard setups.

That's helpful. Thanks! My wife thinks everyone loves those types of steps.
