Do I Need to Waterproof the Area Outside My Shower Before Tiling?

Asked By MellowWave29 On

I'm almost done with my shower surround installation and have mudded it over, getting ready to paint and lay down the tiles. I'm curious if I should apply any waterproofing, even though the area is outside the shower. What's the best approach for this? Also, I plan to replace a few tiles, particularly the chipped ones and improve the grouting along the edge of the tub. Any suggestions?

You really don’t need to waterproof the area outside the shower, except for right next to the tub where water often escapes. Keeping water contained is key. Just focus on sealing that space instead!

Got it! Should I just use caulk where the surround meets the wall? And should I put it over or under the tiles?

I think building codes may have specific requirements, so maybe check those!
