I'm on the hunt for a lathe that fits some pretty specific needs. I've worked on lathes before, but never owned one myself. I'm quite unsure about which brands are reliable and which to avoid. My budget is a big factor since I'm not looking to get super serious about it—just want to try my hand at crafting some unique clarinet barrels I've designed. I'm eyeing a project that requires about three inches in length and two inches in diameter, and I need enough space to comfortably reach the inside. There's a budget-friendly pen lathe on Craigslist that looks tempting, but it doesn't come with a chuck, and all the chucks I've found seem way too bulky. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What’s your budget looking like? I’m curious what kind of lathe you’re considering. Make and model can really affect your options!

I’m trying to keep it as cheap as possible for now. I might upgrade later, but I want something that can handle barrels and odd projects right now. The Craigslist lathe I’m checking out is a Central Machinery model, though I can’t find a specific model number. It’s a white/gray color and does come with a chuck.
