For tackling small patches of Bermuda grass, I've had success by hoeing off the tops and then using sheet mulch for a few weeks to months. After that, you should dig it out completely and screen the soil to catch all the rhizomes. It's a lot of work—I've cleared hundreds of square feet this way, but you need to stay vigilant since there might be seeds or bits you miss.

If it’s a bigger lawn, you may want to consider removing the top 4-6 inches of soil entirely. Then you can start the sheet mulching process as you pull up sections, thoroughly weeding out any remaining rhizomes. But be prepared—it’s a serious labor-intensive project! I too have some patches I keep having to manage, and it feels like a never-ending battle to keep it at bay.

I tried mulching with 4-5 inches of hay and leaves, but it still pops up around my vegetables. I guess I’ll try putting down some cardboard and manure to see if that helps!
