How to Deal with Peeling Paint on Molding?

I just moved into a new place and the previous owner painted the kids' bedroom molding teal. I'm planning to repaint it white, but I've noticed that the teal paint peels off really easily. I want to avoid just painting over it if it's going to come off again. What's the best way to handle this? Should I strip all the old paint, or is there a product that can help? Thanks for your advice!

I’m with you on this—don't just paint over it. Scrape off the loose paint and then use a product like Peel Stop. It helps bind down the peeling areas before you prime and paint over it. Much better solution in the long run!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check that out.

Peel Stop sounds like a great option! I might try that out myself.

You're going to want to scrape off as much of that peeling paint as possible. It’s important not to just paint over it, as that won't fix the underlying problem. A good non-toxic paint stripper can help, too, if you're dealing with stubborn spots. Trust me, getting rid of that bad paint is key!

Yeah, I totally agree! It's a bit of a messy job, but so worth it in the end.

Thanks! I guess I’ll be getting my hands dirty. Appreciate the tip!

Sanding down the molding will definitely help, as it removes the peeling paint and smooths the surface. It seems like the previous paint job wasn’t properly prepped. If it’s really bad, you could also consider replacing the molding altogether if that fits your budget!
