Hey everyone! We're currently building a barndo (barn-style house) and we're at the stage where insulation and drywall are going up. Our home is set up with a 400 amp service across about 5,000 square feet, and we're looking to incorporate solar power in the next year. Since we haven't started using the house yet, we're not sure what our actual energy needs will be, but we're planning to use all electric appliances, including two HVAC units, an electric cooktop, oven, washer, dryer, and two dishwashers, plus an LP tankless water heater. We have some great southern exposure on our 6 acres, making ground-based solar the way to go. I'm hoping to meet with an electrician soon, but I'd love to gather some ideas from all you knowledgeable folks here on how to make the solar setup easier as we finish up the house. Thanks in advance!

Check out Enphase for a DIY-friendly solar system. I'm planning a similar setup on a 400 amp service, and they have great options for solar backup in case of grid outages. Just make sure you think about what kind of battery capacity you’ll need!
Consider setting up a 'solar ready' outdoor panel to make backfeeding easier when the time comes. You might want to build an outdoor shed for your inverters and batteries, placing it far enough away from your house to minimize fire risk. Also, take note of where all your underground utilities are located so you can lay down conduit without problems later on.
