I live in a pre-war apartment and my three radiators are looking pretty grim with chipped paint. I'm considering whether I should remove them, which would involve hiring a plumber, or just repaint them in place, even though that means I won't be able to get the sides close to the wall. Is this whole process going to be a major hassle? Has anyone gone through a similar renovation recently?

Yeah, it can be pricey, but it's definitely worth doing it right. If you live in an area with a lot of historic buildings, look for someone who can dip them to strip instead of using a blast method. It's a lot more effective. And don't forget to set aside a budget for cleaning up under the radiators afterward and fixing any wall issues.
It might be cheaper to swap them out for European-style radiators. They're lightweight, wall-mounted, and take up less space. Honestly, I don’t understand why they haven’t caught on more in North America!

Good point! I'll need to check if my building's boiler can handle those.
