Hey everyone! I'm in the process of setting up a kitchen island for my new apartment and I'm looking for some advice. We found a couple of cabinets to use back to back and plan to place a wood slab on top. The challenge is finding quality wood where I live since we don't have large home improvement stores. We came across a raw pine board that fits perfectly, but I'm trying to figure out the best method to seal it so it's food and heat safe. I won't be using it as a cutting surface, but raw food will definitely be placed on it, and I want to avoid staining and the hassle of washing it since it's too big to remove easily. I've seen options like tung oil and Watco butcher block oil, but I'm unsure if they're suitable or what the maintenance would be like. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Pine can be pretty easily damaged, but it'll serve you well for a couple of years if treated properly. For sealing, I recommend looking for a food-safe butcher block oil; just check the label. Here are a few food-safe wood sealers you might consider:
- Mineral oil
- Tung oil
- Polyurethane sealer (should work well since you're not cutting on it)
- Epoxy sealer (again, check for food safety)
- Wood varnish (use caution and ensure it’s safe for food contact).
Make sure to always read the labels and verify that whatever you choose is food safe!
If you're open to alternatives, consider getting a stone remnant cut and honed. It's a great option for durability and looks fantastic!
That sounds awesome, but unfortunately, it's way out of my budget right now. ?

Thanks for the tips! From my research, it seems like polyurethane would be a strong choice for durability. I’m definitely leaning toward that or the oil finish. What kind of maintenance can I expect with these options?
