I'm currently without garage space for my workshop, but I do have a carport tent that's mostly empty. I'm wondering if this is enough protection from the elements for my tools, ignoring the risk of theft. It seems to me like it's not too different from a non-climate controlled shed or garage, except for the lack of permanence. I can easily bring my hand tools back into the house, but what about heavier items like the metal parts of my workbench vise or the cast iron top of my table saw? Is it just a matter of applying some paste wax occasionally, or will I likely face rust problems in just a few months? I live in the Pacific Northwest near Portland, where summers are nice but winters are pretty rainy.

As long as your carport tent can keep most of the elements out, you should be alright. I have a detached, uninsulated garage and it works fine for my tools. I do occasionally apply paste wax to my cast iron surfaces, but it's not something I have to do frequently. Just keep an eye on your setup to prevent water from blowing in too much!

I get some condensation on my tent during winter, but mainly it stays dry. Just remember, while it might feel dry for you, machines are more sensitive. It's good to keep checking!
