I recently had some work done around my home, and the house painter promised to only trim about a foot off my trees, like my cypress and vine maple. Unfortunately, they ended up cutting off over three feet of branches, which totally messed up my backyard privacy. Now, I can easily see into my neighbor's yard, and vice versa. I'm wondering what would be fair to ask from them for this mistake. Any advice?

Did you talk to the painters about this? Sometimes trimming might be necessary for them to work effectively. It's worth asking! But if it really is a bad over-pruning, you might be able to ask for compensation.
It really depends on the situation. If those trees were close to the wall and were affecting the painters' ability to do their job safely, then it might be on you. But if they went way overboard, then maybe a small credit like $50 could be fair.
Honestly, I'd say just let it go. It sucks, but trees do grow back over time. Maybe if you have some before and after pics, you might feel differently, but otherwise, I’d just move on.
