Struggling to Drill Through Drywall for Poe Cables – Need Help!

Hey everyone, I'm attempting to install some Power over Ethernet cables for my cameras, and I'm facing a bit of a challenge. I started drilling into my exterior wall from the inside using a 12-inch bit but got stuck around 4 inches deep, right at the drywall. I've checked with a stud finder and confirmed there's no stud in that area. Should I just keep drilling through the sheetrock? Or is there a chance there could be a stud or some other obstruction deeper in that I need to be aware of? Any advice would be appreciated!

Are you using a masonry drill bit? If that’s the case, you might not be able to get through wood or nails. A standard wood spade bit should do the trick. If you need more reach, consider using a bit extension. Also, for mounting outdoor cameras, I recommend drilling from the attic at the soffit level. That way, your cables connect nicely into the camera back box without having to run them haphazardly up the wall. Helps avoid issues with UV rays or paint damage later on.

It sounds like you might be hitting something behind the drywall. Since you're drilling through to the outside of your house, you could be bumping into some framing lumber or exterior sheathing under that vinyl siding. Even if you checked for studs, it’s not uncommon to find additional framing behind drywall or other obstacles. I'd be careful and maybe try slightly adjusting your position just in case there's something blocking your path.

Yeah, it’s definitely worth checking your angle. You might find a clear spot just a couple inches over!
