Best Gardening Tools for a Small Garden?

Hey everyone! I'm just getting into gardening and I've started growing a bunch of veggies and flowers in my small garden. I have two stone beds that always seem to be overrun with weeds. ? What gardening tools do you all think are essential for beginners like me? Also, my trowel is pretty terrible—any suggestions on better brands or specific tools I should invest in? Thanks a lot!

For a small garden, a good trowel and secateurs are really your best friends! I recommend having two trowels: one that's larger and rounded for moving soil, and a thinner, pointy one that's perfect for weeding. A smaller spade with a half-length handle is also handy but depends on how spot-on your beds are. You might not need any fancy tools if your garden is pretty basic, just make sure you have the essentials!

If your garden is like my neighbor's, you might think about a battery-powered mower for easy storage. Mulching your flower beds can help keep those pesky weeds at bay, too! Just remember—stainless steel tools last longer than carbon steel ones, so invest wisely in your starter kit!

You might need a pair of garden snips for quick jobs, like cutting herbs or dead-heading flowers. A Hori Hori knife is super versatile too; it’s great for digging, weeding, and even planting bulbs! Don’t forget a pair of lightweight gardening gloves to protect your hands while still allowing for some fine work.

Shopping on platforms like Facebook Marketplace can be great for finding affordable tools. They’re usually dirt cheap, and you can easily sell them later if you don’t use them. Also, check out local stores for sales; I found a bunch of small weeding tools and secateurs on clearance at Tesco last week! By the way, I've been using a hand hoe, which is a fantastic tool for weeding.

I'd highly recommend Kent & Stowe for small hand tools like trowels and forks. You can often find great deals at places like TK Maxx or Homesense, way cheaper than at garden centers. I bought a hand fork and trowel from them last year and they've survived way better than my earlier cheap set from Amazon!

Yep, Kent & Stowe gear is solid! I got their tools as well, highly recommend them.
