How can I make untreated yellow pine weather-resistant for outdoor benches?

I'm looking to build a couple of benches for my patio using untreated yellow pine. What are some effective ways to treat the wood to ensure it becomes weather-resistant? I plan to stain it and use furniture feet to elevate it about a quarter inch off the concrete surface.

Spar varnish is a solid choice for outdoor furniture, as it provides excellent protection against the elements.

A great option is to brush on Minwax polyurethane, following the instructions on the can for best results. Just keep in mind that it can yellow over time and degrade with UV exposure, so you might want to consider that if you want to maintain a natural look.

Using a finish designed for all weather conditions is key. You can layer paints, stains, or oils, allowing for full drying time and ensuring the wood absorbs the finish properly. Polyurethane is also a reliable option to keep your benches looking good for years.

If you're not set on staining, you could go with Thompson's Water Seal instead. It's straightforward and offers good protection.
