I bought 12 Philips Hue 4" downlights thinking they were canless like the 5-6" models, but I messed up—the 4" ones actually need cans. I'm replacing some canless fixtures, so do I really need to buy and install 12 cans? Is there any way to hack these lights to work without the cans? Plus, I've noticed that the 4" cans available are wider than the 4.0" cutouts in my ceiling, which means I'll probably have to expand the holes. Would it be easier to just sell the downlights and go for the canless 5-6" options, or should I get a hole saw and make it work with these?

Adding cans might not be the best route. Just return the lights for ones that are designed to work canless. It sounds like a lot of extra work to modify things when you can just get the right ones from the start!
I agree, these lights work with the color app I use, and unfortunately, there aren't any canless 4" models available.
If the lights you want require cans, then yeah, you'll need to install those. But honestly, why not just return these downlights and choose some that don’t need cans at all? It could save you a lot of hassle in the long run!
There aren't any Hue 4" options that are canless, just the 5-6" ones that I know of, and I want to keep the color-changing feature.

The 4" options from Hue don’t come canless. I’d like to stick with these color-changing lights since they are compatible with my app.
