I'm setting up a cleat system in my garage workshop, and my walls are finished with drywall. I've noticed that most tutorials suggest using a plywood or OSB backer before attaching the cleats. If I'm drilling directly into the studs, is there any reason I shouldn't just fasten the cleats right over the drywall?

Screwing straight into the studs is fine. Just keep in mind you might have plumbing or electrical running through the walls, so double-check before drilling!
You can totally attach the cleats directly to the drywall as long as you're fastening into the studs. Just make sure those screws are solid!
Awesome, thank you! Are those cleats usually tall? I'm thinking of going with 3-3.5" wide 3/4 plywood.
You don't really need a backer board unless you're facing a spot where there aren't any studs, or you want the flexibility to screw into any part of the wall. Just be careful with your drill—don't use an impact driver too aggressively or you might dent the drywall!
I've installed cleats right over drywall, drilling into the studs, and it worked well for me! Heres a quick proof if you're curious: [Watch here](https://youtube.com/shorts/r4C-xxvkUV8).
Make sure your screws are the right length so they won't cause any 'screw-jacking.' That can mess up how well the cleat engages, especially if you're spanning longer areas.

Good point! Thanks for the heads-up.
