Hey everyone! I'm working on a creative project to make a natural home for elves out of trees, but I'm trying to avoid damaging any trees by carving into them. I'm especially wondering if there are any species of trees, like large oaks, that have roots that naturally grow high above the ground. I'd love to know if such trees exist, as it would allow the elves to create their home among the roots while preserving nature. Any suggestions?

Absolutely! Many tropical fig trees, like the Banyan fig and Moreton Bay fig, have what are called buttress roots that rise above the ground. They could be perfect for your elf project!
You should definitely look into the Sitka Spruce, especially ones found in places like Olympic National Park. They've got some amazing root structures that could fit your idea beautifully!
For sure! You might also want to look into trees with aerial roots, like mangroves, or more traditional root flares. They're really interesting and could give the magical vibe you're going for!

That sounds just like what I need! Thanks for the recommendation!
