What Should I Do If I Found a Hibernating Hedgehog in My Garden?

I discovered a hedgehog hibernating under a pile of grass while I was clearing out my overgrown garden. It was a close call because I almost hit him with my hedge trimmer! Luckily, he seemed fine afterwards, just a bit startled. I'm unsure about what to do now since I'll be digging the soil soon. When do hedgehogs typically wake up from hibernation? Is it alright if I cover him up, or should I leave him be? I'm really not good at gardening, and I just want to make sure this little guy is safe!

Yes, you can gently cover him with the grass you removed. Hedgehogs will wake up depending on the weather, usually in a couple of weeks. It's a good idea to leave out some dry cat food and water for him, but watch out for other wildlife that might come by too. If you're feeling adventurous, you could set up a wildlife camera to see what happens!

Great tip on the food! I'll definitely keep an eye on him!

Hedgehogs usually wake up around mid-March, so he should be stirring soon. Since you almost hurt him, I'd recommend being cautious. If he seems inactive or hurt, try to contact a local hedgehog rescue in your area; they can check on him. It's great that you're being considerate!

Thanks for the advice! I'll look for rescue options just to be safe.

Try to leave his space undisturbed. If he’s not injured, he should be fine. Just make sure he has room to nest for the next winter as well. Typically, they wake up in the next couple of months, so you're on the right track!

I'll make sure to do that! And I have a neighbor who's into wildlife; I'm going to ask him for tips!
