I've recently dealt with some leaky pipes in my rental home. After the repairs, I started noticing a really foul smell coming from the bathtub after showers, and my new washing machine began to smell like rotten eggs even after washes. I've checked and cleaned everything I could think of – hair traps, the drum of the washer, and the drain pipes – but the smell persists. The plumber came out to check everything and didn't find any backups or issues with the lines, but they suggested it might be related to the water heater. They replaced a pipe connected to the heater, but the smell hasn't improved. I'm wondering if the p-trap under the shower could be the culprit or if the leak could have somehow caused these odors. Any advice on what I can do?

It sounds like the anode rod in your water heater might be disintegrating, which can give off that rotten egg smell, especially if you’re not on well water. If that’s the case, you’d want to either replace the rod or consider getting a new water heater altogether if it’s old. Just a heads-up that if the water heater is the source, replacing the rod can usually solve the issue pretty quickly!

Right, not on well water. Does that mean the rod inside the water heater needs replacing or just time for a new water heater? And thank you btw.
