What’s the best way to repair drywall damage after removing a large mirror?

I recently took down a large bathroom mirror and ended up damaging the drywall pretty badly. Some of the liquid nails stuck to the mirror came off with it, ripping off the paper from the drywall, and there's also some glue left on the surface. Here's my plan for fixing it:

1. Use a 5-way tool to scrape off all the remaining liquid nails.
2. Cut away any loose paper with a utility knife.
3. Apply Gardz to seal the areas where the paper is missing.
4. Cover up the area with joint compound.
5. Sand it down once it dries.
6. Add another thin layer of joint compound.
7. Sand that down too after it dries.
8. Should I paint after this?

Am I on the right track or missing something?

You can also try using suction cup handles to help with lifting the mirror. A buddy to assist and a couple of pry bars can really help when it's stuck. Just be careful when removing!

For anyone else looking to remove a huge mirror, I’ve got a solid method! First, tape the mirror really well with duct tape; it holds it together in case of breaking. Next, use shims to pry it off. Place single shims first, then stacks of two and three until the mirror pops off. I did this with a 6-foot mirror and it was pretty smooth!

Definitely consider using BIN primer from Zinsser after you sand down the joint compound. It really helps with this type of repair. Try to keep the skim coats thin to minimize sanding; the less you have to sand, the smoother it’ll look in the end! Good luck!

Yeah, BIN works great to adhere the drywall paper.
