How Can I Protect My Squash Plants from Vine Borers?

Asked By GardeningNinja23 On

I've been battling squash vine borers, and it's driving me crazy! Despite my best efforts—killing the bugs, removing eggs, and checking my plants daily—half of my squash plants still got infested. I recently thought about wrapping the bottom part of the main stem in plastic wrap or something similar to keep those pesky borers out. Has anyone tried this or have any other suggestions? I'm really at my wit's end and just needed to vent!

I feel you! I've considered using gauze and aluminum foil. Last year, I tried foil, but the vines still got borers. However, my pumpkins survived because they rooted further up. If you let vines lay flat on the soil, you might still get a decent harvest!

Yeah, I did try foil too, but it didn't work as I hoped. At least my pumpkin plants made it! I still need a solid solution for zucchinis though.

You totally aren't alone in this frustration! Those little buggers can be relentless. I've heard that using Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) can really help control squash bugs. If you’re willing to relocate, some say the irrigated deserts like Arizona don't have these pests. But honestly, it’s all about staying vigilant!

I don’t live in Arizona either, but I feel your pain! Even in the high desert, those pests find a way in. It takes constant attention to keep them at bay.

I haven't tried wrapping the stems myself yet, but I plan to follow the 'foil method' next time. There’s a great video that explains it really well, and that’s where I didn’t even think of using aluminum foil before! Give it a shot!
