Hey everyone! I decided to upgrade my laminate kitchen countertops without breaking the bank and went ahead and painted them. After sealing the paint with Famowood Glaze Coat Epoxy (the one the guys at Lowes recommended, which is supposedly suitable for various surfaces like bar tops), I ran into a bit of a dilemma. While the product claims to be "food friendly," I later found out that it doesn't achieve FDA's "food safe" status. This raises a concern for me since I often make homemade pasta and roll dough directly on the countertops. Now, I'm worried that I might have messed up my kitchen. Am I overreacting here? What steps can I take to make these countertops genuinely food safe, perhaps with a top coat or other methods? Any insights would be appreciated!

You could definitely consider applying a food-safe epoxy as a final layer. This way, you can have peace of mind knowing that the surface is safe for food prep. Just make sure it’s designed specifically for countertops if you go this route!
Another option is to use a large baking sheet whenever you're working with dough. While it might seem like a simple workaround, it keeps your counters clean and provides a safe surface for food prep. Plus, it’s easy to clean up later!
Why not invest in a good cutting board? Just lay it over your countertop when you’re prepping food. It’s a great way to protect the surface and make cleanup easy. And hey, plenty of people do this! Just note that cutting boards come in handy for all sorts of cooking.
