Is it reasonable to choose where minisplit units are installed?

I asked my contractor to place the outdoor minisplit units above the window on the ground floor. When I returned after about 20 minutes, I found he had installed them about 6 feet higher. I objected, but the job was already done. Is it fair for homeowners to have a say in where these units are installed?

When you’re talking about 'outdoor split units,' it’s helpful to specify all the details, like where the lines come through the wall. If you weren’t clear, the contractor might have just interpreted your request in a way that made sense to him. Precision is important here.

For sure! Clear specs help avoid these situations. A little more detail could have gone a long way!

It's definitely reasonable for you to express your preferences for where the units go. However, it's also important for the contractor to communicate any challenges with your request. Sometimes their expertise can lead to placement that might work better technically, even if it wasn't what you envisioned. But if you were clear about where you wanted them installed and they ended up somewhere completely different, that’s not okay. Clarity on both sides is key!

Exactly! It's all about communication. If they could have just had a quick chat about it, it could have saved the confusion.

Totally agree! If the units weren't exactly above the window as requested, then something went wrong in the communication.

Have you asked your contractor why he installed them higher than you wanted? Maybe there are reasons related to installation or efficiency that you're not aware of. Understanding that could help you figure out if it was still a reasonable compromise or just a mistake.

Good point! It’s really worth asking for his reasoning before jumping to conclusions.
