I'm considering putting down a thick layer of large stones—about 3 inches—to help prevent weeds from coming back consistently. Has anyone tried this, and does it actually work? What are the pros and cons?

I'm a contractor, and I've worked with these kinds of setups. For better weed prevention, try using a woven polypropylene fabric before laying down stones. Combine that with a good herbicide, and you can manage weeds pretty effectively. Just remember to keep up with your pre-emergents every few months to stay ahead of any new growth!
If you're looking for better weed control, landscape fabric can help when you put down the stones. But keep in mind, no method is foolproof. Wind can bring in dirt and seeds that can still germinate on top. It's a bit of a battle!
In the short term, a 3-inch layer of stones might help keep some weeds at bay, but over time, soil can build up in the gaps, and you may start to see seedlings sprouting through. It won’t be a permanent solution, though. Nature always finds a way!
Yeah, I've noticed that too! Even with a thick mulch, I still get little plants popping up. It's like they're just waiting for a chance!

True! I've heard mixed things about fabric, though. Some folks say it’s a waste and weeds still come through it.
