Can Gorilla Hooks Really Hold a 50 Pound Mirror?

Asked By CraftyNinja92 On

I'm looking to mount a heavy 50-pound mirror that's 6 feet long and I've heard about Gorilla Hooks which claim they can handle that weight. Someone suggested using two of those hooks for support, but I feel a bit skeptical—it just seems too simple! Are there any experienced DIYers here who can weigh in on whether Gorilla Hooks are safe for something this heavy?

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Gorilla Hooks for heavier items. I used heavy-duty toggle anchors rated for about 75 pounds for a similar mirror setup, and I feel like that’s a much safer bet. If possible, try to screw into the studs to ensure it’s super secure. Hooks can work but I just prefer something more reliable!

Good to know! I’ll check the toggle anchors at my local store. Thanks for the tip!

No problem! Better safe than sorry with mirrors—trust me.

You really don’t want to hang anything heavy with adhesive; it's not going to hold well. Always secure your items with solid supports. For a 50-pound mirror, a couple of screws into the wall studs or heavy-duty anchors will give you the peace of mind you need—much better than any adhesive solution!

Sounds like solid advice! I’ll stick to screws for mounting it.

Absolutely! Just make sure you check the placements and you’ll be good to go!

I've tried quite a few heavy-duty drywall hooks, and while Gorilla Hooks can work, there are definitely better options out there. They tend to make larger holes which might weaken their grip over time. If you're set on the easy route, consider using a French cleat system—it’s a little more work to install, but it offers solid support for heavy items. Just make sure to check the weight ratings on anything you choose.

So, you'd suggest something more durable over the Gorilla Hooks? I really want to be safe with this mirror.

Definitely! It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially with something heavy like a mirror.
