Is It Too Late to Plant New Vegetables for Fall?

Hey everyone! Unfortunately, some of my plants didn't make it through the heat and pests this summer. I'm wondering if it's too late to start growing new veggies now. What types of plants should I look into for this time of year? Any suggestions?

It's not too late at all! You should check the fall planting dates by entering your zip code in the farmers almanac planting calendar. Just remember, fall planting means sowing in late summer for a fall harvest! I'm in zone 9b, and since my first frost isn’t until December 11th, I'm starting seeds indoors because it’s been really hot here too!

What zone are you in? That really changes what you can grow now. Some places can garden year-round, while others have to be mindful of the frost dates coming up. Let me know so I can help you out more specifically!

It's definitely not too late to plant! You might want to focus on a fall garden instead of summer crops now. I've already started planning mine. Some great options are cabbage, sprouting broccoli, spinach, lettuce, and baby squashes. They should thrive in the cooler weather!

For those fall crops, do you think it's better to start the seedlings inside or can I just sow them outdoors?

Make sure to consider your hardiness zone. I'm in zone 5b, and there's a whole bunch you can still plant, especially if you're in a similar region. Quick-growing veggies like beans, snap peas, and various lettuces are great choices. Just avoid trying tomatoes and peppers at this point; they likely won't make it in the coming months.

I just put in some bush beans last week, and there’s still plenty of time before the cold weather hits. If you're quick, you can get a lot of veggies going before the first frost! I'm also planning a last round of corn and need to start broccoli and Brussels sprouts for the fall. Keep pushing on those greens too!
