Choosing the Best Backer Board for My Solar Build: Fire Resistance Options?

Asked By SunnyDay99 On

I'm gearing up to start my solar project soon, and I'm debating between using regular cement board or going for fire-resistant drywall. I initially thought about applying a fire-resistant paint to the cement board, but I've found the paint to be really expensive and I would need to keep reapplying it. So now I'm considering fire-resistant drywall, which I hope could work better with water-based paint. My plan is to mount this on top of the existing drywall, which I'm pretty sure isn't fire-resistant. What do you all think? Would drywall be the smarter choice since it seems easier to handle?

Why are you considering backer boards? Just keep in mind that drywall isn't great for outdoor use, especially if it faces rain. Are you installing this on the roof of a house, or is it a ground-mounted setup? Just curious!

Oh, I should have been clearer! It's actually for the inverter and battery setup inside an enclosed garage, not for the solar panel installation. Sorry for the confusion!
