Best Tool for Consistent Shelf Spacing?

I'm working on building some bookcases with a group of beginners, and I want to make the process as foolproof as possible. I'm using pocket joints for the frames, and I've got it down to attaching the tops to the sides with a Kreg jig. For the shelves, I've been using blocks of the same height as spacers, which works fine. However, I want the flexibility to change the shelf height between different bookcases, even though they have the same frame.

I'm looking for a tool or method that allows for easy, precise shelf height adjustments without risking inconsistency in measurements. I've thought about using clamps with marks for height adjustments, but I'm worried about variation when multiple people use them. Jack stands could work, but I'm concerned they might damage the wood. I'm leaning toward just stacking various blocks of wood for consistency, but I'd love to hear any better suggestions!

Have you thought about using adjustable shelves with a drilling jig? They’re really handy for setting shelf heights and it gives you the flexibility to add shelves at different heights without permanently committing to a fixed one. It sounds like you’re focusing on stability with fixed shelves, but modern adjustable systems can be surprisingly sturdy, especially with 3/4" plywood. As for the shelf pins, they generally don’t require much trimming off the shelves, just a little to ensure they fit nicely!

Honestly, I think the wooden blocks idea is the way to go. They’re super reliable and you don’t have to worry about anyone messing up the height adjustments. Plus, you can really push down on them or clamp onto them without concern. I've also used 1-2-3 blocks for spacing; they’re great because they let you easily adjust to 8", 9", 10", or even 11" heights depending on what you combine them with.
