I'm trying to set up a laser tripwire at my door that will connect to a small light on my gaming desk, but I honestly have no clue where to start. Any advice would be appreciated!

Laser tripwires can be pretty tricky to set up. Have you thought about using a motion sensor instead? It could send an alert without all the hassle of dealing with lasers. Just a thought!
