Should I Paint Over My House’s Wood Panels?

I just bought a new house, and I'm really torn about what to do with the wood paneling on the walls. My wife thinks the heavy dark wood makes the room feel too old-fashioned and wants to lighten it up with some paint. I'm concerned, though, about how that might affect the home's resale value. What options do I have here?

If you’re not fond of dark wood, then maybe this house isn’t the right fit for you. It’s best to embrace what you have instead of trying to change everything. That wood can bring a lot of character to the space if styled properly.

I get where you're coming from, but I really think you should think twice before painting over that wood! It’s a unique feature, and it would be a shame to lose it. Maybe consider hiring a designer to help you find a way to use the wood as an accent rather than overwhelming the space with it. You could play up the light and color in the room to balance it out without losing the charm of the wood.
