Should I Trim the Tops of My Tomato Plants to Fit Under Netting?

I have a small, enclosed garden with some construction fencing over the top to keep deer out, but my two plum tomato plants are growing above the fence by about a foot. I'm considering trimming them down to fit under some smaller netting I've found. I'm really proud of how well my garden is doing this year, with lots of green tomatoes already on the plants. Will cutting the tops of the tomato plants affect their growth or the tomatoes?

Yes, you can definitely trim the tops of your tomato plants! Doing so usually encourages more growth lower on the plant, which can be beneficial. It's great to hear your tomatoes are thriving! Just be careful not to cut too much and make sure you know if your plum tomatoes are indeterminate varieties, as topping might affect them differently. Good luck!

I’ve topped my tomato plants a few times, both accidentally and on purpose, and I've never faced any issues. It really depends on the variety, though, so keep that in mind! If you're unsure about the species, try to find out more before making a decision.
