How Can I Get Smoke Out of My House Without Spending a Fortune?

Asked By CountryDreamer92 On

I'm living in a countryside area where there's been a lot of nearby fires lately. The smoke has become so intense that it practically looks like fog outside. I don't have central air conditioning—just a window unit—and it's been really hot (around 30°C). I've tried using a small air purifier in my bedroom, but the rest of the house is still filled with smoke. I can't leave right now due to obligations, so I'm looking for practical and budget-friendly solutions to filter the smoke from my home. Any suggestions?

Honestly, it sounds like you're already doing your best if you're not ready to spend on air purifiers or leave. Sometimes just blocking windows and using any fans to circulate air can help a bit!

Yeah, I feel stuck but I can't leave. I’m just outside the evacuation zone, and my existing purifier isn’t cutting it because it’s for my bedroom only.

You could start by purifying just one small room—maybe your bedroom first. It’s a good way to tackle the problem on a manageable scale until you can get something better!

That's exactly what I’m doing right now—starting small!

You might want to look into building a Corsi-Rosenthal box. It's basically a DIY air purifier using cardboard, a box fan, and filters. Just a heads up, you’ll have to change the filters often, but it can really help!

These filters aren’t too expensive where I live, and I already have a box fan! Appreciate the suggestion!

Check out DIY air purifiers—you can make one using a box fan and some filters. My parents rave about this method! Just like this link shows: [Filtrete DIY](https://www.filtrete.com/3M/en_US/filtrete/home-tips/full-story/~./how-to-make-a-diy-air-purifier/?storyid=e1cfeb36-75fe-4ac9-8727-37e911234ce4). It's a solid way to get cleaner air without breaking the bank. Just keep in mind that they might be a bit fragile, so handle with care!

This is actually genius! I’ve got a fan, so I’m definitely going to try it! Thanks for the tip!

For really bad air quality, these DIY setups can be more effective than many commercial units out there.
